Following the arrival of Kieran Trippier, Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Mario Hermoso and have announced the former Espanyol defender as a new Los Colchoneros player.
More than a month of negotiations have finally come to an end, and Hermoso will now be entrusted with the task of replacing Diego Godin and Lucas Hernandezalongside fellow summer signing, Felipe.
Hermoso enjoyed a fantastic 2018/19 season with Espanyol and in the final months of the campaign he became one of LaLiga Santander’s highest rated defenders.
Furthermore, he can play at both centre-back and left-back, something which has only increased his value to Diego Simeone in the absence of Lucas.
Despite the clause embedded into his Espanyol contract which ensured Real Madrid could sign him for only 7.5 million euros, the player has opted for a move to their local rivals, even rejecting interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
His contract with the Barcelona based club was due to end in June of 2020 and thus the club had little option but to sell him this summer.
Having come through the youth setup with Los Blancos, many expected him to eventually re-join the club, but he wasn’t to Zinedine Zidane‘s liking.
