The University of Education, Winneba, (UEW) has introduced a new curriculum for the implementation of Teacher Education Reforms.
Speaking to the media at a two-day seminar in Winneba under the theme “New Educational Policy Reforms”, the Director of the Institute of Educational Research and Innovation at the University of Education Winneba, Professor Jophus Anamuah Mensah said that the dynamics of teaching will change with the introduction of the new curriculum since teacher motivation and other incentives have been factored in the new curriculum. “People see teaching as a last resort and also it doesn’t have the needed prestige. Therefore, I want us to bring this to centre stage so, if we change the dynamics then we will be able to attract some more people to the profession. I think there is so much that we have to do that if teachers have resources to teach in the classroom, they will be motivated and our classrooms will be full,” he said.
Teacher attrition and retention in the country remains complex, with reasons for leaving or staying often related to individual factors.There are a lot of factors that militate against the retention of teachers, as well as their satisfaction of the conditions of service in public as well as in private senior high schools.
Stakeholders and Civil Society Organisations have called on government to review the conditions of service for teachers in the country since the problem of teacher attrition in the nation’s schools is partly attributable to non-compliance of the conditions of service for teachers by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
